Part 1: That Time We Got Mad At Overlord
Sometimes as an author, you get ideas that just WILL NOT LET GO, no matter how much you say, “But I have ten other projects to write!”
With those ideas, all you can do is just write it so it’ll finally shut up.
Thus begins the story of Succubus Corruption: The Heroes Are Doomed! (and, eventually, Into the Arms of the Demon).
Though, technically, it begins way earlier than that.
See, Jacob and I are both huge fans of Overlord. In fact, it was the anime that finally made me like isekai and OP heroes after years of being indifferent to both.
The thing that made Overlord different was that, though the main character is technically OP, he’s also a regular dude isekai’d into an identity where his subordinates expect him to be the baddest, most brilliant strategist in the room. Problem is, he doesn’t know shit. He has to learn how to navigate his sociopolitical situation as much as his magical power, and a lot of the series’ strength derives from that conflict.
However, about three seasons in, the series began to lose us. The first two seasons handle this conflict well, but as Ains grows in power–into the Overlord of the title–he progressively turns into a fairly conventional, boring villain type, rather than the complex pseudo-villain protagonist we’d come to enjoy.
And y’all know what happens when writers say, “I’d have handled this story differently.” 😉
